The Tauren actually helped the night elves in the war of the ancients, but kept to themselves mostly. It was thrall and cairne, they pretty much bonded and Cairne swore to stay by his side. I only just started reading them, with war crimes first, followed by rise of horde, last guardian, and the next to for war1/war2. It helps sooo much to better understand the major and minor characters. It changes everything. They are shit books but the lore is almost worth it.
Having read the book, Galakrond was much bigger. He is described as being so large that he could swallow multiple proto-dragons whole in a single bite. Now, the aspects are larger than proto-dragons, but I imagine they are the size of four or five of them put together. From there, we can say that Galakrond was freaking enormous. To my understanding, the main races that are native to Azeroth are exclusively Trolls, Goblins, and Tauren (which evolved from the Yaungol found in Pandaria). Even Proto-Drakes are from the elementals. But then you have to consider all of the "creatures" on Azeroth, all of which may or may not be tied to the Plane of Life (through the Emerald ... As to the stuff with creating the lich King, that's the Dreadlords acting on orders from Denathrius to try and twist the legion's efforts to his (and his master's) advantage. The legion saw it as an easy way to get an army to pave the way for a new invasion for them. However, Richard Knaak and Christie Golden both play a very large role in having written some of the earliest narrative books, as did Metzen himself. As far as other fantasy series, I never get tired of recommending the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
